In recent years, the greenhouse effect has intensified due to the relentless burning of fossil fuels, jeopardizing Earth's habitable temperatures.
The Global Carbon Atlas reports that in 2021, the top carbon emitters were China, India, and the US, contributing 52% of global CO₂ emissions.
Historically, the US has led in carbon emissions, releasing an astonishing 422 billion metric tons of CO₂ since the Industrial Revolution—accounting for nearly a quarter of all emissions from fossil fuels and industrial processes.
With their large populations and ongoing development, China and India could further increase their emission shares. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects India's global emissions could reach 10% by 2030.
Despite their significant contributions, these major polluters are striving to reduce their carbon footprints. The US aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, while China has set a goal for carbon neutrality by 2060.
