Olympic Games Host Cities

An infographic showcases the cities that have hosted the Olympic Games over their extensive history.

On the world map, it's clear that Europe dominates, hosting 17 out of 32 editions of the Olympics, with several cities holding the Games multiple times.

In the Americas, North America has hosted the Games 7 times, including the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, while Rio de Janeiro remains the sole South American city to host in 2016.

Asian cities have welcomed the Games 4 times, and Australia has hosted them 3 times (with Brisbane set for 2032). Notably, no African city has ever hosted the Olympics and that won't change until at least 2036.

The 21st century shows a shift towards greater diversity in host cities. The first eight editions were mostly European (7 in Europe, 1 in North America), while the latest eight have been more evenly distributed: 3 in Europe, 2 in Asia, 2 in the Americas, and 1 in Oceania.

London, Paris, and Los Angeles will each have hosted three times, while Athens and Tokyo have hosted twice. Interestingly, Paris experienced a 100-year gap between their second (1924) and third (2024) Games.
